The Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic is an ever-evolving issue for not only our community but the world. Measures to protect our country are rapidly increasing as new confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise.
According to the Department of Health, as at 6.00am on 30 March 2020, there have been 4,093 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, with 284 new cases since 6.00am the day before. In Victoria, there have been 56 confirmed cases overnight, bringing the total to 821.
On Monday 30 March 2020, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced stage three shut down measures imposing further restrictions on Victorians with new penalties surrounding COVID-19. This is a response to the Federal Government’s announcement last night that gatherings would be limited to two people to slow the spread of COVID-19.
From 11.59pm on 30 March 2020, Victorians will face on-the-spot fines of more than $1,600.00, if they breach COVID-19 restrictions that limit gatherings to just two people.
What if I live in a household of four? My workplace is considered an essential service, what do I do?
These restrictions do not apply to:
- People who live in the same house;
- Workplaces; and
- Schools.
As per previous restrictions set out by Federal and State governments, Victorians should only leave the house for the following reasons:
- To seek medical care;
- To go to work or study;
- For daily exercise; and
- To buy essential items.
Weddings are still capped at five people and funerals at 10.
If you do not need to go out, the advice from Federal and State governments is to stay home. This prevents the spread of the highly contagious virus and prevents hospitals from being overcrowded with critically ill patients.
The new measures, and their application, are never black and white. If you are issued with a penalty notice in relation to the above, you may have defences available to you. If in doubt, seek advice.
