Anthony Brand and Tim Gattuso - Accredited SpecialistsThe two managing partners of Slades & Parsons, Mr Anthony Brand and Mr Tim Gattuso, are both Accredited Specialists in Criminal Law. They have been recognised as such by the Law Institute of Victoria, which is the professional body representing all Victorian lawyers. Accredited Specialists have a higher level of expertise than that of an ordinary lawyer who might offer their services to criminal law clients. The use of the term ‘Specialist’ is regulated by law, and only lawyers who have passed through a rigorous, independent and objective accreditation process are entitled to use it and display the Accredited Specialist logo. Accredited Specialists must have at least five years full time practice experience and at least three years practice experience in their area of specialisation. Accredited Specialists must also maintain a very high degree of Professional Development in their area of specialisation. All specialists must pass a comprehensive and rigorous examination process, testing technical knowledge, writing and practical advocacy skills. This examination process is developed and assessed by industry experts. Specialists are re-accredited and re-tested every three years. Specialists are also required to maintain a high level of involvement in their area of speciality. This is achieved in two ways. The first is by ensuring that the speciality remains a substantial part of their practice. The second way is by maintaining a higher level of continuing professional development than other lawyers including participating in activities such as seminars, conferences and workshops. These activities are continually monitored by the Law Institute of Victoria. The purpose of the accreditation process is to provide you, the consumer, with a reliable indication of who can be considered an expert within a given area of law.
